Clatterbridge - Cancer Research - Understanding Cancer

Janet Jones

Janet JonesAmanda and Stephen have set up this Tribute Fund in memory of their mother Janet Jones. They want to honour her memory by supporting our scientists’ up-to-the-minute research into cancers, so that others don’t have to suffer as she did. They are impressed by her courage and dignity and very appreciative of Clatterbridge’s care for her and so many others like her. They tell her story.

Total raised to date in Janet’s memory:

£650.00

Mum was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1996 and following a mastectomy operation, chemotherapy and radiotherapy at Clatterbridge during 1997, everything seemed to be going well. Unfortunately, in 2003 the cancer returned, this time in her bones. Mum fought the disease bravely with the attitude of ‘I've beaten this thing once, and I'll beat it again’. Sadly, we lost her on the 11th June 2006, aged just 56.

Janet was a devoted mother of two children, Amanda and Stephen. She has been an inspiration to us both, showing a great sense of courage through each stage of her illness. She always tried to look for the positives and find ways to get around the obstacles that stood in her way. Despite being in a great deal of pain she seldom complained, taking care of her family through all the happy times we shared together. Mum will be greatly missed - her warmth, laughter and love will always be remembered by us.

‘JANET ALWAYS THOUGHT OF OTHERS BEFORE HERSELF’

Her closest friends said of her: ‘When Jan first became ill it was a great shock to us all.  But Jan, throughout the whole time, remained ever positive and believed that one day she would regain her health, sadly that was not to be.

‘The legacy that Jan has left behind is her tremendous courage and selfless way in which she dealt with each step of her journey to a better place, never wanting to be a bother and always thinking of others before herself. She never complained - in fact, only days before she sadly passed away, she found it in herself to laugh with us, even though she was getting very tired. We will miss Jan very much and always remember Jan for her strength of character and how much she loved her children Amanda and Stephen who were a great joy to her. May she now have the peace she so richly deserves.’

We have chosen to set up this tribute fund in her honour in the hope of helping fund research into cancers, especially when, as in Mum's case, there seems no logical reason why she should have contracted the disease, never having been a smoker and leading a healthy lifestyle prior to diagnosis.

The staff and volunteers at Clatterbridge have been fantastic in their care and consideration shown to our Mum and other patients. Mum drew strength from the professionals and other patients she stayed with in hospital, so we would like to do our bit now by helping to fund this worthwhile hospital. We know Mum would be supportive of this too, as she herself has donated funds in the past.

All donations given in Janet’s memory have been used to fund vital research carried out by Clatterbridge Cancer Research when based at the JK Douglas Laboratories, Clatterbridge Hospital.
