Clatterbridge - Cancer Research - Understanding Cancer

What Your Donation Funds

Every donation, no matter how big or small, brings us a step closer to understanding cancer and providing the people of Merseyside and Cheshire with a better chance of beating this awful disease.

Just take a look below to see that even a £5 donation can bring real benefits to cancer research – by enabling us to purchase enough petri dishes for 10 weeks cancer research.

Yes we also need to fund larger and more sophisticated pieces of research equipment, but the importance of these smaller items is not to be underestimated. Remember that in 1928, Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin in a petri dish, and with your donation we can have an equally groundbreaking discovery and find a cure for cancer in our petri dishes – right here in Liverpool. You can make this happen.

  • £5 enables us to buy 100 petri dishes, essential for growing tumour cells so we can study their behaviour – this is enough for up to 10 weeks' research!
  • £10 enables us to buy 1000 Microtubes. Our scientists use these to perform reactions on tumour cells – this is enough for up to 4 months' research!
  • £25 enables us to buy enough Pipette Tips for one day’s intensive research, essential in measuring small quantities of liquid, enabling us to set up reactions to characterise and understand tumour cells.
  • £50 enables us to buy 25 MicroWell Plates, used to perform multiple chemical reactions to identify DNA changes and understand the characteristics of cancer.
  • £384 would provide the resources for a scientist to continue with their investigatory work for one week – bringing us a step closer to understanding cancer.
  • £1,666 would pay for a scientist to work on an investigatory project for one month – bringing us closer to understanding cancer.
  • £5,500. We need to raise £5500 each day just to stand still and continue with the research into cancer we are already funding.
  • £8,000 would enable us to use a Gene Reader machine to create a individual map of a cancer patient’s DNA, bringing us closer to understanding the genetic causes behind cancer. This is a vital area of research.
  • £20,000 would buy all the essential equipment needed by a scientist to investigate cancer causes and treatment options for a whole year.
  • £2 million would sustain our current research programme, including its team of scientists and their equipment, for a whole year.  That is approximately £1 for every resident in Cheshire and Merseyside.
